journal entry 2

Sophie Bang's journal

Oh well.....
I suppose I can get better at painting,
It is harder than I thought.
Sometimes the people who I paint don't like the paintings and run off.
It makes me sad when they do that......
It is very rude.
They don't even let me say thank you for their time.
I could get better......

Edith called today.
She said she was under arrest.
I don't want to believe it.
But it may be true.
In the backround sound on the phone,
It sounded like someone was breaking the door down and smashing the walls of their house.
It would be horrible if that were true.
Taking away them all...including little David.
I'll just hope it isn't true.

It is true.
They took Edith away and her husband and her son David.
I don't know how I can stand this.
That is just cruel, taking them away and all.......
I talked to their neighbours.
They said they raided their house.
I can't complain... but I would like to.
I don't know who arrested them.
I just hope Edith and her family survives.

Journal entry 2 reflection

I chose to make journal entries for Sophie bang because she lives alone like Edith after she escapes and would want to have a journal or something like that so she could have someone else to speak to. I wrote three parts to her journal. One about her painting, one about her hoping that Edith and her family didn't get arrested, and one about her complaining and mourning about them being arrested. I wrote those because she would probably write them when they happened. She would complain about people not liking her paintings, hoping that her friends weren't in prison, and finally mourning that they were in prison.

Sophie Bang was vital to the novel because she showed David who his mother was and told the story about how David probably got into the concentration camps. If she had not been there to paint someone when David went by, there would be a completely different ending. He would of probably not of made it to Denmark because him knowing that his mother living in Denmark boosted him determination to get to Denmark. The time setting is just before the war for the first one, and at the beginning o the war for the second one. I know this because Sophie Bang would be painting before the war, and the next two at the beginning of the war because some people would be arrested at the beginning of the war.

Journal Entry 1

Edith Hjorth Fengel's Journal

I made it to Denmark. It took so long, but I still don't think he should of done that.
If my husband and child are dead, I would of liked to have died with them.
Since I am alone now, I won't kill myself. If I were to die, I would want to die with them.
I am so sad.
The fact that I will never ever see them again will haunt me for the rest of my life.
I don't think I will ever smile again. I have seen too much, to many horrible things.
I suppose should call Sophie, to tell her that I'm still alive.
Yes, I will do that right now.

Sophie was so happy that I am alive. when I told her that my husband and child were dead, she mourned.
I would cry with her, but I have cried so much already that I cannot cry any more.
I guess that means I am not full of tears.
Grief seems to have replaced it.
Sophie said that she felt so sorry for me.
She said she wouldn't be able to live properly if she were in my position.
I can't blame her.
I don't know how I can live with this.
I suppose that I will have to go with it.
I might be able to smile again.

Journal entry 1 Reflection

I chose Edith Hjorth Fengel as a person to make a journal of because she made the most sense in my mind because she had gone through so much. As she became alone, she could make a diary to have someone else to be friends with.

I chose the time of her journal entry to be after she escaped from prison. Since the story doesn't fit any time, I couldn't put any date in. I chose that because it would make sense for her to do all those things after she got away from prison. I came up with the ideas for the journal entry when rereading the story to find Sophie Bang's name. Then I thought that she should get into a journal.

Map 1

http://www.geographicguide.net/europe/maps-europe/maps/europe-political.jpg
David's trip through Europe from Bulgaria to Denmark via Greece, Italy, Switzerland, and Germany.

David had a very long trip. Starting in Bulgaria and going to Denmark via Italy is not a very easy walk. Of course David had rides, but it would still take a long time. Where he started in Bulgaria was unknown to me but I did know that he started near the South-west part of it. I also didn't know where he landed in Italy of the ship. It was near Naples, but south of it probably in some bay.

I chose this map because it shows David"s route so I can understand how long and hard his journey was. The map is also good because It shows all the big cities of Europe so I can pinpoint where David went and how he got there. I guessed where his first ship went following the fastest way to Naples. As the last thing before Denmark is still in Switzerland, you don't know anything about what happens to him in Germany. So drew a line avoiding major cities on the map. This may make the map unreliable to Anne Holm, but it is David's route through Europe.
I Am David
by Anne Holm
This is my first picture for "I am David"

I chose this image because it shows how David in the book hides from people because he doesn't want to be caught by them.(In the story, David refers to the people who want to capture him and bring him back to the concentration camp as them.) At the beginning of the book, David is very cautious around settlement of people and even animals. He hides from them like in the picture. David eventually learns that some people are not as bad as them. The places where he is cautious are when he is in trouble. He often hides and thinks over what he can do before he executes his plan. The only time he cannot get by them is when he loses his sense of caution but gets away by a diversion.

I think David hides from everything because he does not know much about people. The only thing he knows about people is them and their personalities. As he only knows the personalities of them, he will not know what the personalities of nice people. As they are mean to David, he hides from them and will hide from other people. he trusts no one for the same reason that they were mean to him. When the nicer people gain David's trust,(example, Maria's family, Sophie Bang, other taxi drivers) he is polite and slowly learns that not everyone is like them.

This is my second picture for "I am David"

I chose this picture because it shows how awful the conditions in concentration camps (guy on left who is skin and bones),the depression in the camps(none of the boys look happy), and the fact that the men imprisoning Jewish people showed no mercy on bringing children into concentration camps. The boys in this picture are probably  like David. They look like they are around 12 years old(David's age when he was in the concentration camp,)and probably felt the same way as David (that it is awful in the concentration camp, hatred of the guards, wanting to escape from the concentration camp). I think that the boys in that picture could not speak of there hatred because if they did, they would be killed.

David probably looked like the boys in the picture in the concentration camp. He would be thin, sad, and treated like dirt. Some people would have little hope of getting out of the concentration camp alive, let alone being able to forget the entire experience. But David would not think like that. He is very brave and always thinks of himself greatly. he always thinks he will survive even if there is little hope. The only times where he thinks he will die is at the beginning and the end. When he escapes from the concentration camp, he was told that he had only 30 seconds to get away. When gets over the fence at the concentration camp, he thinks that they will see him running away as his 30 seconds were almost up. However, he does manage to get away. At the end, he runs into them and gets away on a diversion. David would always think that he could get out of the concentration camp. He would be brave and confident enough to do that.

The information in a visual is that it is easier to think of what is going on in a story. You can see the story like a movie in your head if there are pictures. In understand stories much better if there are pictures. Especially in novels or long books. I can remember what happens earlier in the story if there are pictures.
